About 10 years ago I tried to grow tomatoes for the first time. I stunk. But I kept trying and year by year I got smarter and better. Eventually I figured it out and ended up able to grow more seedlings than I could plant. I gave my extras away to friends and neighbors, who came back to me during and after the season to rave about the incredible, delicious bounty of tomatoes (and peppers and cucumbers) they grew from my seedlings. They said I was crazy to just give them away, that people would happily pay for them. Well now we'll see...
I've gotten more adventurous and ambitious, now growing a wider selection of vegetables, year-round, with a common identity: EVERYTHING I sow and grow is an HEIRLOOM or Open-Pollinated varietal. I look for Unique and Unusual Varieties that are not available anywhere else in the SoCal. EVERYTHING is grown right here in my low-tech garage green-space, or my backyard nursery. NOTHING is delivered from anywhere else---though I do have to schlep my trays and flats from the garage to the yard. EVERY component of my growing, from soil to nutrients to amendments is 100% ORGANIC. Even my water is filtered!
